A Town Built Around an Air Base
North Highlands as we know it today exists because of McClellan Air Force Base. Founded in 1936 as the Sacramento Air Depot and renamed for Major Hezekiah McClellan in 1939, the base shaped the entire community for 65 years. At its peak in the 1970s, McClellan employed over 25,000 people — one of the largest employers in Northern California. The neighborhoods, schools, shopping centers, and churches of North Highlands were all built up around the base's workforce.
Built Fast, Built All at Once
Most of North Highlands' housing stock went up in a single explosive period — the late 1950s through the 1960s — to keep pace with McClellan's growth. Tract builders threw up thousands of three- and four-bedroom ranch homes on quarter-acre lots in just a few years. The result is a community of nearly identical-age housing, almost all of it now between 55 and 70 years old. Original windows are long past replacement, and the second-generation double-panes installed in the 80s and 90s are now hitting prime IGU failure age.

When McClellan closed in 2001, North Highlands lost its biggest employer overnight. The base was redeveloped into McClellan Park — today one of the largest business parks in Northern California, home to over 200 tenants from aerospace to logistics.
