The Town That Started as a Junction
Roseville started life as Junction — the literal meeting point where the California Central Railroad crossed the Central Pacific in 1864. The town was renamed Roseville the same year, with most accounts crediting the wild roses growing along the tracks. By 1909 it had become the busiest junction west of Salt Lake City, processing more rail traffic than any town between Sacramento and the Sierras. The Pacific Fruit Express Ice Plant
From 1913 to the 1960s, Roseville was home to one of the largest ice manufacturing plants in the world — built by Pacific Fruit Express to keep refrigerated railcars cold as they hauled California produce east. At its peak the plant produced up to 1,400 tons of ice per day. The shift to mechanical refrigeration shut it down in the 1960s, but the rail yards north of downtown are still here, and Roseville's rail-town heritage never went anywhere.
